ACUTE HEALTH EFFECTS

Swallowed:

Will cause severe irritation to the mouth, mucous membranes, throat, oesophagus

and stomach. May result in difficult breathing, stomach pain and circulatory shock.

Toxic if swallowed.

Due to acid in the stomach, hydrofluoric acid will be released with systemic fluoride

poisoning likely with severe and potentially fatal hypocalcemia.

Eye:

Will cause severe irritation to the eyes, with effects including: tearing, pain, and

stinging. Depending upon duration of exposure, eye damage may occur.

Skin:

Will cause irritation to the skin, with effects including; redness, itchiness, and

possible dermatitis.

Inhaled:

Dusts may cause irritation to the nose, throat and respiratory system with effects

including: coughing, choking. In severe cases, inhalation may result in spasm,

inflammation and edema of the larynx and brochi, chemical pneumonitis and

pulmonary edema. Extremely destructive to tissue of the mucous membranes and

upper respiratory tract.

Chronic:

This product may cause severe eye irritation and depending upon duration of

exposure, some form of permanent eye damage may occur. Prolonged or repeated

skin contact may lead to dermatitis. Exposure to fluorides is associated with

fluorosis. Kidney damage, asthma and rheumatism symptoms may occur if

exposure standards are exceeded. Chronic effects include excessive calcium

precipitation by the fluoride ion in the bones, ligaments and tendons. Prolonged or

repeated skin contact will lead to necrosis (death) of the skin.

Aluminium Industry

Inorganic fluorine compounds play an outstanding role in the aluminum industry.

They are frequently encountered not only in the manufacture, but also in the

processing and finishing of aluminum.

The manufacture of aluminum on a commercial scale was first made possible with

the introduction of cryolite at the end of the 19th century. Cryolite as the essential

component of the electrolyte (85 – 90 %) decreases the temperature of the smelting

flux electrolysis.

Other important additions to electrolytes in current commercial use are aluminum

fluoride, calcium fluoride and lithium fluoride. These fluorides increase the

conductivity of the electrolyte and improve the efficiency of the used energy. The

aluminum so produced has a purity of between 99.5 and 99.9 %. Refining, that is to

say the thorough cleaning and improvement of aluminum, is carried out for example

by a process of three-layer fused-salt electrolysis. This method represents the only

commercially viable process for the production of pure aluminum. Further

electrolyte components from our product range which may be used are barium

fluoride or calcium fluoride. Aluminum produced by this method has a purity of

between 99.99 and 99.999 %.
