Copper Oxide CAS 1317-38-0 Black Copper Oxide Used in Fireworks Plating

1. Product Introduction

Copper oxide is black or brown-black powder, slightly hygroscopic. Density 6.3-6.9g/cm3, melting point 1326ºC, insoluble in water and alcohol, soluble in acid, ammonium chloride, potassium cyanide solution and ammonia solution. It is widely used as a pigment in ceramics to produce blue, green, and red glazes and glass. Cupric oxide is also employed as a catalyst in various chemical reactions and as a raw material in the production of other copper compounds.

copper oxide features

  1. Color: Copper oxide compounds display distinct colors. Copper(I) oxide (Cu2O) appears as a red or brownish powder, while copper(II) oxide (CuO) is black. These colors make copper oxide suitable for use as pigments in ceramics, glass, and paints.

  2. Electrical Conductivity: Copper oxide is a semiconductor material, meaning it can conduct electricity to a certain extent. The electrical conductivity of copper oxide can be modulated by adjusting its composition, crystal structure, and doping. This property is crucial in electronic applications, such as sensors, diodes, and solar cells.

  3. Optical Properties: Copper oxide exhibits interesting optical properties, including absorption and reflection of specific wavelengths of light. These properties are exploited in applications such as pigments, solar cells, and optical devices.

3. Product Applications

  1. Antifouling Coatings: Copper oxide nanoparticles are incorporated into antifouling coatings for marine applications. These coatings release copper ions, which possess antimicrobial properties, inhibiting the growth of algae, barnacles, and other marine organisms on ship hulls.

  2. Water Treatment: Copper oxide nanoparticles can be utilized in water treatment processes. They exhibit antimicrobial properties and can help in the removal of contaminants, such as organic pollutants and heavy metals, from water sources.

  3. Electrical Conductivity: Copper oxide is a semiconductor material, and its electrical conductivity can be manipulated by controlling its composition and structure. This property makes it useful in electronic components, such as diodes and sensors.

  4. Antifouling Coatings: Copper oxide nanoparticles are incorporated into antifouling coatings for marine applications. These coatings release copper ions, which possess antimicrobial properties, inhibiting the growth of algae, barnacles, and other marine organisms on ship hulls.

  5. Ceramic and Glass Industry: Copper oxide is used in the production of ceramics and glass. It imparts color and different shades to glazes and glass compositions, enhancing their aesthetic appeal.
